Amazon.com: Dmkfoto Pivot Flash Mount Bracket For 35mm And Dslr Camera: Camera & Photo Price
Just a brief couple of comments, with more later after I use this item a bit more. I mainly bought this flash holder because it also necessarily provides a vertical handle on the bracket, which always seemed to me to give me more control than just holding the camera. A long time back, I used to use a 35 mm with a large potato masher-type flash (a Honeywell) and got to like that configuration.
So far, the only drawback that this thing seems to have is that it requires a special Allen wrench and a small open end (about a or 5/8 inch) or maybe a tiny Crescent wrench, to make any adjustments or reconfigurations on the three screws that hold the arms together. The only finger-tightened parts of the bracket are the parts that clamp the flash unit to the bracket, and the bracket to the camera. (And incidentally, I believe the former one involves a steel thumb screw into the aluminum of the bracket. In other words, don't over-tighten! Stripping this screw could make the unit basically unusable, unless you're good at fixing stuff like that. It could be repaired with re-threading, etc., but who needs the hassle?.) It is likely that people will keep the configuration it comes in, rather than constantly readjusting it. This is the most common one, one that places the flash directly above the lens.
A bracket like this one is more flexible than those that cannot be readjusted, and seems to cost about the same. It certainly is cheaper than a Canon bracket. I believe that once one starts to do more and more serious photography with the upper end SLR's it is used for, the need for these brackets becomes clearer. Mainly, serious external flash units are getting heavier and longer, and it does happen that one will be bumped hard or snagged while in the hot shoe. Severe damage to the camera is almost inevitable, and a broken camera body at this point basically trashes the whole thing, period. You could salvage the lens, memory card, and strap. That's it.
More later if I find anything to add.
Aloha!
